Economic Development

Our mission:
To facilitate the growth, diversification and stability of the Bothell economy; to create meaningful employment opportunities for all of the citizens of the City; and, by expanding the economy, to provide a sustainable future for Bothell

What’s happening in Bothell today?
  • Thank goodness for biotech
  • Growth continues in our retail activity centers: Thrashers Corner, Canyon Park, Downtown (it’s college-hip!)
  • Single family residential is booming (low interest sparks high interest)

How are we preparing for tomorrow?
  • Formal ED Action Program
  • Improving development permit processes
  • Retaining and growing technology and office-based businesses
  • Attracting retail
  • Planning and funding infrastructure improvements
  • Improving development permit processes
  • All quasi-judicial items decided by Hearing Examiner; appeals go directly to Superior Court
  • Implemented 30+ specific process improvements in March as a result of collaboration between staff and customers
  • More improvements on the way as part of the EDC-supported Model Permit System effort (Bothell one of four full partners)

Retaining and growing technology and office-based businesses.
  • First-generation business park buildings were single-story tilt-ups configured for office/warehouse and assembly; demand transitioned to Class A office, R&D, and biotech manufacturing
  • Recognizing need to accommodate future demand, City Council in 2002 increased height limits to 100 feet, or up to 150 feet for manufacturing processes needing height

    Attracting retail.
  • Northshore School District’s 26-acre downtown property – an unparalleled redevelopment opportunity
  • City Council approved a Motor Vehicle Sales Overlay at Thrasher’s Corner, Canyon Park, Downtown and North Creek Valley
  • Staff actively pursuing major retailers, touting excellent demographics and proximity to I-405 and SR-522, -527 and -524

    Planning and funding infrastructure improvements.
  • UWB/CCC South Access on SR 522
  • Potential relocation of SR 522 through downtown
  • Allows expansion of Park at Bothell Landing
  • Creates four new blocks with stunning redevelopment potential

Bothell’s economic development strategy promotes quality of life for its citizens, by enhancing opportunities within the city’s boundaries for shopping, dining, entertainment and family-wage jobs.
